When I was growing up one of the things I truly loved was ice skating. We lived in the heat of Central California, and I escaped the heat some weekends watching ALL the skating competitions I could find on TV. I even took skating lessons (I fell on my butt for three weeks in a row and gave up. It was not my calling :)) I've already started sharing my love of skating with Mia, who took to it much faster than I did thanks to her nifty skating companion (why didn't they have those when I was a kid?!?)
Something else I've loved sharing with my little girl is the gift of reading, so it was a match made in heaven when I learned that ice skating legend Kristi Yamaguchi is hosting a charity skating event to support her "Always Dream Foundation," an organization devoted to supporting early childhood literacy!
The Golden Moment skating extravaganza, scheduled for Sept. 3 at the SAP Center in San Jose, will mark the 25th anniversary of Yamaguchi's Gold Medal win at the 1992 Winter Olympics in Alberville. The co-host of the show is none other than skating legend and Olympic Gold Medalist Brian Boitano, and the show features several pro skaters including current US National Champion Karen Chen of Fremont.
September is also National Literacy Month, so its the perfect time to celebrate Kristi's history and the amazing work her foundation is doing. And I'm excited to give one lucky winner a pair of two tickets to the show AND a set of children's books written by and about the Bay Area!
“As a mom of two, I have always made it a priority to spend time every day reading with my children, helping them create a strong foundation to developing their own love for reading and learning,” said Olympic gold medalist Kristi Yamaguchi. “Just a little extra help at this young age can be so foundational. It can mean the difference between a life of struggle and one of inspiring opportunities.”
Reading has been a life changing and enhancing gift for me, and I've already started to see this affect Mia in so many ways. We spend lots of time at the library and read books not just at bedtime but for lots of daily "occasions." All that exposure had paid off—she is already reading in small doses, and I couldn't be prouder.
So join us at the Golden Moment celebration to honor one of the Bay Area's greatest competitors and support early childhood literacy at the same time! You can buy tickets here (use code FAMILYPACK to get 4 tickets for $31.25), or enter to win two tickets to the show and children's books!
