Looking for a new music class for kiddies in the Mission? Check out Music for Aardvarks and Other Mammals, a new weekly music class launched in The City this month after a long run in NYC.
Mia and I checked out a demo class at the Mission location of the program, hosted at Steppin' Out Dance Studio on South Van Ness. Right away we loved the program. Teachers Laura and Peter work together to offer a cute musical mix for the kids that is engaging enough to hold grownup attention as well since mama and papa (or grandma or nanny) are encouraged to join in as well.
Teacher Laura has been with Music for Aardvarks since 2001 so she knows the songs (and working with kids) inside and out! She also has great musical taste in general—in our last two sessions our free dance songs were "Get Down On It" by Kool and the Gang (a personal favorite) and the cleaned up version of 2Pac's "California Love."
Since the program launched in NYC the songs are geared toward city living and the teachers have enhanced them with SF-relevant lyrics—"ridin' in a taxi" becomes "ridin' in a Lyft" or "ridin' in an Uber!" Transit becomes Muni rather than subway, and Nob Hill and the seals at Fisherman's Wharf all get a shoutout.
Music for Aardvarks runs a 12 week program for kids 5 months-4 years old and there is still time to sign up for a demo or register if you're interested in joining the winter class. At press time there are still slots in Tuesday and Thursday classes in the Mission, as well as a Wednesday class at the Gatehouse in the Marina. The fee is $264 and new registrations get 25% off with the code new2mfa. Compared to other music classes in town the fees are competitive and come with a few CDs to rock out to in the company of your home!

Classes are 45 minutes long. Parking around the studio is tough so arrive early or take Muni (or Uber or Lyft)!
