Humphry Slocombe: Amazing Ice Cream, San Francisco Style

There are a few times in life where something normal and everyday is transformed in such a way that it becomes a revelation. Such was the experience on my first trip to Humphry Slocombe in the Mission years ago.

As I worked my way through their ever-rotating list of flavors I stumbled on an insane-sounding combination—roasted white chocolate lavender. I'm not a big chocolate person but lavender in food is always a treat when done well (read: lightly), and I was blown away not only by the flavor, but the texture and even the smell. Heavenly.

Famous for their delicious Secret Breakfast of bourbon ice cream and corn flakes, their flavors can turn your idea of what ice cream is supposed to be completely around. Like the candy cap, which is flavored with mushrooms (yes, you read that correctly) and is one of the sweetest, creamiest treats I've ever had. I loved it so much!

Co-owner Sean was scooping when I dropped in recently, and while my diet is dairy restricted I couldn't resist at least tasting a couple of new flavors. He directed me to, Butter by Moodlight, the flavor created for Virgin America Airlines (if you haven't figured it out, HS is a big deal)! It's not often in stock since most of it goes to the airline, but if you're a fan of brown butter its a must have. I also tasted the Here's Your Damn Strawberry, which is a fruity flavor bomb. The strawberries tasted like they'd been picked that morning. HS makes wonderful sorbets as well so vegans, don't shy away.

While many of the flavors are geared for advanced palates, Humphry Slocombe is very stroller friendly. Even when the line builds outside the door as happens so often, kids run along the storefront while their parents balance cones. Make sure the kids in your party taste before you order based on the name alone, or you may end up eating theirs too. Oh, wait...

Tasting before ordering is strongly encouraged so be patient if the people in front of you try everything and don't hold back when its your turn!

The original location is in the Mission and there's now a second one in the Ferry Building, so no matter what end of town you're on, mind blowing ice cream is nearby. And if you've recently traveled on Virgin America show your boarding pass to get a free scoop!

VERDICT: While writing this review I swung by HS's Facebook page to see what was going on (peach habanero is on the menu) and found a comment I left after that first visit in 2011. "It's awesome on a cone. Just get some." Still sounds right to me!
